The Borough of Shippensburg is served by three, all volunteer fire companies, Vigilant Hose Company No. 1 established in 1843, Cumberland Valley Hose Company No. 2 established in 1859, and West End Fire & Rescue Company established in 1955. Funds to support the individual companies come primarily from a variety of fund raising activities undertaken by the volunteer firefighters. In addition, Borough Council annually makes an appropriation to the companies to help fund their operating costs.
Borough Council appoints a Shippensburg Borough Fire Chief who is the senior fire officer in the Borough. The fire chief is responsible for making recommendations to Council related to matters concerning fire issues and coordinating and uniting the three fire companies.
At the present time, Shippensburg Borough has a Class 4 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) as applied against the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule.
