Installation of a new 12” water line, to replace the old 4” line, on Burd Street, from Prince Street to Queen Street, will begin this Spring
The Borough Authority only maintains the water mains and the water meter, provided the water main has been accepted by the Authority. All other connecting parts of the water service line are the responsibility of the PROPERTY OWNER.
Once a customer is notified of a water leak on their service line, they have 10 days to have the line repaired.
Rehabilitation work on the Gunter Valley Reservoir and Water Treatment Plant should be completed this summer.
Dykeman Spring, a long-time water source for the Borough Authority, will be taken off-line by DEP order, in May of this year.
The Borough Authority is in the process of locating a new well to replace Dykeman Spring and this process should be completed this Fall.
A new waterline and bore under the railroad tracks, on Seibert Road, will connect Seibert Road and the West End of Shippensburg.
Sweep outside with a broom, not the hose. Five (5) minutes of hosing will waste, unnecessarily, some 25 gallons of water.
Fill your dishwasher full, as it will use the same amount of water for a normal cycle, whether it contains a full load of dishes or just a few items.
For any small area of grass, water by hand to avoid waste. On steep slopes, try a soaker hose to help prevent wasteful run-off.
Do your lawn sprink-ling early in the morning, between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., when the water demand is low. After 10:00 a.m., both heat and evaporation increase, robbing the lawn of moisture. Sprinkling at night is fine in dry climates, but in humid climates the Relatively cool, moist conditions can create an ideal environment for lawn diseases.
Note: average water consumption is 5,000 gallons per person per quarter.
a small leak of just one-quarter gallon per minute will waste 360 gallons of water in one (1) day, equaling over 32,000 gallons of water in one (1) billing cycle.

To aid in scheduling and to provide better overall service to our customers, a three (3) day notice is required for water- associated business.

You may purchase either of these materials at the Wastewater Treatment Plant located on Avon Drive. We are generally able to handle the sale of these products between 7:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Some days we, too, have problems and will not be able to load your vehicle. At those times, we would ask for your understanding and ask you to try again later. Please call ahead (532-5414) to make sure that both the machinery and the manpower are available to load your vehicle.
This year a new product will be introduced, in addition to the regular compost and mulch. The new product is really not new. Let’s call this stuff SCREENED COMPOST. It will cost more, but you will immediately see a difference over the non-screened compost. The cost for this new SCREENED COMPOST will be $10 per scoop (cubic yard). The additional cost reflects the additional time and equipment required to produce this product.
Cumberland County has purchased a new piece of machinery that allows the Borough to screen the compost to remove much of the objectionable “stuff” that finds its way into the compost. By removing the sticks, twigs, trash and lumps, the end product is much improved over the regular compost that you have purchased in past years.
Quantities of the SCREENED COMPOST are limited and the Borough reserves the right to limit the quantities sold to any individual.
COMPOST/MULCH AND SCREENED COMPOST…..ON SATURDAYS
Leaf and grass compost will again be sold at the Borough’s facility (across from the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 532-5414) on the following Saturdays, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. -

We continue to have problems at the compost drop-off areas.
WE CANNOT HANDLE BRUSH AND LIMBS THAT ARE LONGER THAN SIX (6) FEET IN LENGTH. WE ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WHEN YOU DROP-OFF STUMPS AND WOOD WITH DIAMETERS LARGER THAN SIX (6) INCHES.
Please keep your lengths and diameters small and please NO STUMPS!
The frequent appearance of construction debris is also a problem. This facility is NOT meant to handle your old fenceposts and fencing, that old shed that you just tore down, those large rocks that you dug out of the garden, the wooden pallets you got from a friend but really can’t use after all, and similar items. The machinery doesn’t like this stuff and you probably don’t want old paint chips and nails in your mulch.
Please dispose of these items in the appropriate way and help us to produce and maintain a finished product that you are willing to put on your flowerbeds and gardens.
Remember that we have two (2) drop-off areas. Area #1 is for leaves and grass, while Area #2 is for ALL brush and garden wastes. The leaves and grass will compost nicely BUT if there is too much small brush and woody material mixed in with the leaf/grass mixture the finished product will not be so nice. We’re trying to recycle these items and produce a product that you will want to use in your flowerbeds and gardens. Help us, to help you!
Early in March 2000, the Borough began a rehabilitation project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. It will be a long project, as completion is not scheduled until early fall of 2001, that will replace a lot of major equipment at the plant. This equipment has been opera-ting for almost 20 years, with a lot of it running continuously, 24-hours a day.
FMPP is currently doing some fund raising projects. The first is a Home and Garden Party candle sale. Orders for these candles will be taken through March 7 and delivered March 21, 2001. Orders may be placed with any FMPP member or at the Borough Office or the Park and Recreation Office at the Community Center. Twelve different scents are available at a cost of $7 each. Another fundraiser is the 27-meal deal. Five hundred tickets, which may be purchased from any FMPP committee member, will be sold for a chance to win a dinner at each of the participating restaurants in Shippensburg and Chambers-burg. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased from any FMPP committee member. The drawing will be held on April 4, 2001, at 7:00 p.m., at the Community Center. Of course, you may still send your tax-deductible contribution to FMPP, 115 North Fayette Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
