Trash Collection

Chapter 99 - Garbage, Rubbish and Refuse, Article I,

Section 99-3, of the Code of the Borough of Shippensburg, states the following:

A. All refuse, with the exception of certain types of industrial wastes, as shall be defined by Borough Council, shall be removed only by the Borough collector. No person, firm or corporation, other than Borough Council, shall be permitted to remove refuse from the Borough, except for certain types of industrial wastes, as shall be defined by Borough Council.

B. Furnishing Containers. The resident of each housing unit shall be responsible for providing an approved container for storage of refuse. No refuse may be stored, at any time, in violation of this article. Apartment houses and commercial and industrial establishments may utilize large containers which can be emptied into compactor-type trucks, either by purchasing these units or by renting them from the Borough.

Section 99-2.D:
(1) Refuse containers shall be placed, whenever possible, at ground level on the property, not within the cartway of a street or alley, but accessible to and not more than 10 feet from the side of the curb of the street or alley from which collection is made. Where, in the opinion of the Borough, the physical characteristics at a property and the area adjacent thereto are such that compliance with this provision for location of containers is not practical, the Borough may require alternate locations for containers.

(2) Refuse containers shall be placed at the location for collection not earlier than 24 hours prior to collection and shall be removed not later than 24 hours after collection.

Collection Schedule:

Residential refuse is collected on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday beginning at 4:00 a.m.

Commercial refuse is collected Monday thru Friday beginning at 4:00 a.m.

The Borough observes the following holidays:

New Year's Day Presidents' Day Good Friday Memorial Day Independence Day

Labor Day Thanksgiving First Day of Deer Season One-half day before Christmas Christmas

When a holiday occurs on a:

Monday - Refuse will be collected on Tuesday thru Friday. Monday's route will be collected on Tuesday and Tuesday's route will be collected on Wednesday. Thursday's and Friday's routes will not change.

Tuesday - Refuse will be collected on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday's route will be collected on Wednesday. All other routes will remain the same.

Thursday - Refuse will be collected on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday's route will be collected on Wednesday.

Friday - Refuse will be collected on Monday thru Thursday. Thursday's route will be collected on Wednesday and Friday's route collected on Thursday.

One-half day before Christmas - Refuse will be collected as usual.
